In addition to its abolitionist history, Waynesboro also has a rich colonial history dating back to 1607 when Jamestown settled on Roanoke Island off North Carolina's coast. During their stay on Roanoke Island, which lasted for only four months before they were forced out by Native Americans*, colonists developed strong relationships with local Native Americans* whom they called "the Powhatans." These relationships would continue even after British rule over North Carolina ended in 1755; these interactions would help shape future Virginians' perception of themselves as part of a larger culture vs outsider status*.
