In 1775, Waynesboro was the site of a small skirmish between British and American forces. The battle was fought near the junction of Current River and Virginia Line. The town was founded in 1775 by John Waynesborough, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town's first store opened in 1778. In 1814, Waynesboro became part of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The town was destroyed by Union troops during the war. Waynesboro is now a ghost town located within EasternVirginia University's Campus Recreation District.
