On July 4, 1755, Francis Drury launched his expedition from Portsmouth Harbour at Easton Point towards North Carolina but encountered no problems until he reached Newport News on September 11th where he found booby traps rigged by Native Americans preventing him from reaching NC waters. Captain James Cook visited the Chesapeake Bay area in 1779 while exploring for new routes to Asia and made landfall at Easton Point on November 3rd near modern day Northampton County before continuing northward along the Eastern Shore ofVA Peninsula/Maryland Territory into Delaware Bay which he discovered on October 7th that same year while sailing out of Annapolis Harbour towards Philadelphia Harbor. In 1781 Governor Thomas Nelson sent Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Butler with two companies of militia against hostile Indians at Mount Vernon which resulted in a massacre resulting in over 100 Indian dead including Chief Powhatan's sonums (later known as Pocahontas) as well as three British officers and one enlisted man killed and sixIndia prisoners taken prisoner plus some personal effects carried off by native warriors including guns, munitions and other treasures never seen again until they were discovered auctioned off in 1827 at Montgomery & Lancaster plantations near Richmond).
