The first group of people who settled here were English fishing traders who came ashore from their ship "Fenric" on November 3rd 1611 after reaching what is now called Princess Anne Island. They named their new land "Virginia" for Queen Elizabeth II because she had been visiting England that year. The first permanent settler here was Nicholas Condit who arrived with his family in 1624. He built a log cabin which still stands today on North Point Road near where modern day Portsmouth Naval Base sits today. In 1777, British General Edward Braddock led an expedition against Washington's forces at Braddock Ford outside of present-day Alexandria, VA., but was defeated by General John Forbes’ force7 miles southeast of present-day Arlington Heights On October 12th 1779 a detachment of 100 volunteer militiamen under Colonel Samuel Smith (later Lieutenant Colonel) landed at Roanoke Island after being sent by Admiral Montresor to explore America’s western coast They failed to find any worthwhile resources and returned home before long Two days later two more detachments landed at James River Landing near modern day Petersburg; these fared better and found abundance of Pocahontas Resources including Tobacco which they exported back to England Captain John Smith met with Powhatan Chief Powhatan about this new land he purchased from him during this time period signifying an end to Native American dominance over much of what are now Central Virginia As early as 1785 Captain John Smith had chartered HMS Resolution for exploration along both coasts; however his voyage never made it beyond Cape Henry where he stranded his ship on June 14th 1787 . This event helped spur development around Hampton Roads area as numerous entrepreneurs took up supplies trading goods with Native Americans including carpenters etc .. Aftermath: In 1802 Congress passed legislation allowing free trade between Great Britain and America so Virginians began exporting goods like tobacco which brought wealth into our community After independence: In 1819 Constitution was ratified making Virginians part of US political system represented through Senate chamber in DC while local government continued functioning under Board Of Supervisors until 1889 when county government became fully elected
