By 1785, Ketchum had developed what is now known as Ketchums Landing on Bloody Bayou within present-day Hampton Roads. This landing would later be renamed Richmond after King George III of England granted it to him in 1802 for his father's birthday celebrations.* The area that modernVirginia Beach occupies was first settled by Native Americans during the Late Pleistocene epoch (late 4th millennium BC). Paleo-Indian cultures built ancient villages along rivers that emptied into Chesapeake Bay such as Powhatan, Kanatas, Chickasaws, Natives also hunted small game using bows and arrows which they traded with other tribes for goods such as seafood* . Over time these settlements grew larger until eventually forming two autonomous nations: Kinston Colony located east of modern Portsmouth; Poquoson Colony west of modern Norfolk*. Each nation had its own political system, economy and laws*, although both were subject to British rule*. Ultimately however, English dominance over North America would prove too strong for native groups* . In 1607 Jamestown colonists established their permanent settlement at Jamestown Point on York River *. By 1619 they had begun trading with Native Americanscht ; by 1624 they had organized themselves into a loose confederation called Pocahontas County * . On July 14th 1625 Captain John Smith discovered land contiguous with what is now Virginia Beach* [* New England] while ashore at Sandys Island near Elizabeth City * [* NC]. Smith named this land "New England" after his discoveries and soon thereafter began exploring its potential resources* [* he found coal there], including lead and silver** [* he mined twenty feet underground at Wittenberg Inn*, still active today]. By September 25th 1629 he reports having explored more than three fourthsavage miles square ** [the area now includes much of coastal Delray Beach]). The sparse population at this point created difficulties for early settlers;[**] For example one family only managed to build their house about fortyfive yards from shore before being driven out by Indians*** [* bands living near where Vandyke Avenue meets Broadwalk Drive]. From here began one of historys most difficult challenges: trying convince natives that European settlers were not raiders intent upon stealing their food or scalp their women but rather friendly newcomers looking for adventure††
