In 1792, a group of men from the town of Portsmouth, Virginia, founded the first gunsmith shop in America. The store was located on 3rd Street in Portsmouth and was run by a man named Gabriel Warren. In 1836, the Portsmouth Rifle and Pistol Club was formed and began to sell firearms. It wasn't until 1869 that an ordinance was passed allowing for handgun sales within city limits. In 1872, the Portsmouth Gun Exchange opened and became one of the most important gun dealers in Virginia Beach. The exchange sold pistols, rifles, shotguns and ammunition. In 1922, it merged with another gun dealership called the Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Firearms Incorporated (Winchester). From 1921 through 1954, Winchester produced arms for both military and law enforcement use. By 1938, all production had stopped due to World War II shortages. However, after 1945 Winchester resumed production of handguns under license from Smith & Wesson Corporation (S&W). Today there are over 1 million pieces of firearms produced by Winchester alone!
