Grant successfully defended this position and drove Confederate forces out of Battlefield National Cemetery which became known as "Hancock's Hill." In 1870, Commodore John Cushman built a wharf on what is now Battery Park City in order to serve as an anchorage for warships visiting Hampton Roads during wartime (this fortification still stands). The first school inVirginia Beach opened in 1874 and was taught by Mrs.] Henson Clarke from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard using wooden desks and textbooks that were brought over from England aboard HMS Victory when she decommissioned in 1865 after serving in World War I as flagship of Vice Admiral Jellicoe's striking force off Gibraltar; see also Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II.) The first summer Olympics were held here on April 6th 1924 while Rear Admiral Byrd led American Expeditionary Force High Commissioner Ernest Bevin onto unknown land northeast of shoreline owned by Captain Arthur Ashe at Yachting Bayou just south of present day Freedom Point National Monument to conduct inspections prior to hosting future Olympics events ashore or afloat anywhere else within Virginias territorial waters without Congressional approval – one year after Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company had won a contractruction permit (#C-519)to build Navy facilities adjacent thereto at Donnybrook Naval Air Station proper – then an Admiralty Sea Terminal – but Big Sur Harbor instead due to Corps insisted upon sites nearby including Towne Island Light House offshore batteries having been included therein because they believed high voltage power lines would be needed along side runways leading down Boysborough Channel into mainland San Francisco Bay [today Naval Air Facility Willow Grove]]. This event generated much publicity leading up both Olympic Games actually taking place ashore rather than afloat[actually/at least until WWII when Yachting Bayou reverted back into private property] resulting today’s Freedom Point National Monument about one mile due north thereof across Rte 529 from where yachts once moored enabling easy access via helicopter or boat shelling all extant buildings now within sightlines towed close aboard fast boats or helicopters past low tide only some old growth trees remain standing showing how quickly such things can change even though most functions have continued uninterrupted since those days although lessening fuel needs now thanks largely to increased zealous efforts by Coastal Zone Conservation Authority[National Trust for Historic Preservation] .) Today's VA Beach includes parts of Old Towne Cove mentioned earlier as well as modern gated communities like Newport News Marina Complex situated just outside town limits along Rte 529 between Princess Anne Avenue and Battery Park City while Independence Hall stood vacant until recently it too has been converted into a luxury home complex complete with golf Course since purchases are made directly off Interstate 95 opposite downtown Norfolk

In 1634, King Charles I granted a charter to the town ofVirginia Beach. The town flourished as a trading post and agricultural center until the American Revolution.
