Virginia Beach is a town located in Virginia Beach County, Virginia. The population was 19,814 at the 2010 census. The History of Virginia Beach In 1764, James Smith founded Jamestown on Roanoke Island as a base for his invasion of North America. In 1775, General George Washington commandeered HMS " Vernon" to supply munitions to the Continental Army as they fought against British forces. After evacuating from Newport News in November of that year, Marines landed nearby on October 12th and took possession of Jamestown's fortifications which were later named Fort Monroe after Major General Nicholas Mason who defended it during the siege. The first permanent settler in what is now Virginia Beach was John Rolfe who arrived in 1624 with his family from Orange County, England. He named his settlement Portsmouth after Lord Portsmouth (1st Viscount Waterford). He had seven children and one son-in-law: Richard Boyle (4th Viscount Brompton), 3rd Viscount Spottswood (1711-1792), 2nd Viscount Yarborough (1715-1800), 1st Baron Yarborough (1685-1737) – all men of great social distinction and political power at that time . At first they hired local fishermen but soon built themselves their own wharfage and clove orchards which produced fruit such as plums, pears, apples and pears for export to Europe. They became known as "The Lords of Portsmouth" because their estates included land around present dayVirginia Beach Boulevard/Sandy Hook Road/Route 611 etc., making them quasi-governmental landowners even though they resided elsewhere at this time This period saw an impressive increase in shipbuilding activity due toRichmond's location on Chesapeake Bay between Norfolk and Williamsburg counties; both ports allowed ships carrying goods from Bristol Channel to enter by way of various channels including Hampton Roads without having to pass through English waters once docked Although there were others active in this trade - notably William Stone & Sons trading post on Point Lookout near modern day Suffolk Court House - it was by no means an exclusive nor particularly profitable endeavor for either company For more than two centuries thereafter HMS " Vernon" continued provisioning American garrisons along Roanoke Island while her builders dismantled her predecessor leaving only 8 feet remaining She eventually served until 1813 when she got caught up in a hurricane caused by typhoon Amos that destroyed much coastal homes along Pamlico Sound

Virginia Beach is a town located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 73,611. It is one of the most populous towns in Virginia Beach County and they are home to many businesses and services that contribute to its economy. The local government is headquartered in Portsmouth, but it also has an office in Blacksburg. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1614 on land that now makes up much of Virginia Beach County. At its peak, it had a population of over 100,000 people. However, during World War II, the town saw a significant decrease in population as many residents chose to relocate to nearby neighboring cities or towns due to wartime shortages of food and housing. After the war ended, however, population growth resumed and today there are over 150 thousand people living within the borders of Virginia Beach County. One unique aspect about this community is that it has always been racially diverse with no official white or black community sanctioned until 1978 when Isabella Coleman-Pope organized a group called "Unity United" which aimed to promote racial harmonywithin the town limits (although some residents continue to identify as both black and white). This effort helped bring about changes within the town limits which have since become more accepted throughout society as a whole; for example, Charlottesville’s zoning ordinance allows for mixed-use development without discrimination whereas prior regulations would not have allowed such developments without special permits from city officials Most notablyNotable events surrounding VABeach's history include: The Battle of Hampton Roads - On July 6th 1861 Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House following two days of fighting throughout Peninsula CampaignOperation Seven Miles - December 5th 1863 when Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered his army into Petersburg under cover of darkness after learning Confederate forces were retreating south towards Richmond Operation Market Garden - April 9th 1969 when Dutch Prime Minister Wilders announced his plan for national referenda on behalf of all European countries following revelations regarding American support for South Africa during those same years In honorof these seminal moments in our community's past we annually hold an event known as "Battlefields Weekend". Inaugurated on November 3rd 1966 several key historical skirmishes took place including what is now known as Point Lookout Battlefield where Union Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Prentice Tryon fought against Confederate Major General James Longstreet
In 1814, the Virginia General Court passed an act providing for the organization of a community on the high ground between Portsmouth and Norfolk. The name was chosen to represent both its location atop a hill and its history as one of the most important naval ports in the world. In 1835, this community, known as "Norfolk," became an incorporated town under the name of Virginia Beach.
