The community experienced many growth periods during its history including being a thriving small town with active businesses until 1951 when it became part of the newly formed city of Lynchburg which then merged with Richmond, Virginia to form Greater Lynchburg on October 1st, 2001. Today, Vienna remains an important culturaland economic center within Lynchburg while also enjoying access to much nearby parkland including ESPN's (now ABC) Wide World Of Sports Complex which hosts both football and basketball games each season as well as other entertainment options such as concerts and dance events throughout the year
