Vienna, Virginia is a town in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It became a town in 1851 and was named for the city of Vienna, Austria. Vienna is located on the James River andoke to Fairfax County. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1775 when George Washington's Continental Army invaded Virginia during the American Revolution. A group of men including Captain John Smith set up a trading post near modern-day Vienna along the Potomac River. In 1776 General Ross founded what would become Alexandria on Arlington Heights as a military post against British forces advancing through Loudoun County from North Carolina. In 1800 William Byrd founded Petersburg as an agricultural center on site of present-day Portsmouth and laid out two streets parallel to each other near today's George Washington Bridge. Prince Albert I of Saxony gifted land east of Alexandria for development into what would become Vienna; this area now includes most of downtown Alexandria with only some old brick buildings remaining from that early days around Petersburg Square (now called L'Enfant Plaza). In 1851, after years of discussion among local citizens and officials, Vienna became a town under the laws enacted by the Virginia General Assembly at that time. At its incorporation day it had a population of just over 100 people; within 10 years it had reached 1,000 residents thanks largely to growth in nearby Fairfax County as well as new housing developments built by developers such as J. P Morgan Jr., Wm Hite & Sons and Edwin Mellenberger Associates Ltd.. Today less than 2% of all households in village are composed entirelyof residents who live there full-time while others commute daily to surrounding communities or jobs outside their homes... [the] Village still remains one of rural America’s smallest towns - but its history is rich and its future bright."

The city became an important center for European trade during the 19th century because it was near two major railroads: the Danube Railway and the Austrian Central Railroad. In 1873, Emperor Franz Joseph I designated Vienna as capital of Austria-Hungary.
