The city of Vienna, Virginia was founded in 1783 by the brothers George and John Washington. The town quickly became a center of trade and commerce due to its location on the Danube River. In 1838, Austria-Hungary began an invasion of Hungary and invaded Vienna. The Battle of Gyula took place in downtown Vienna as Austrian forces fought against Hungarian troops under Prime Minister Deák Ferencz. The battle resulted in over 1,500 deaths, including many American volunteers who fought for the Austrians. As a result of the battle, Austria-Hungary withdrew from Hungary and the Treaty of Trianon was signed between Austria-Hungary and Hungary that ended World War I. During World War II, Vienna was bombed by the United States during the European Axis Powers campaign against Nazi Germany. The bombing caused extensive damage to buildings within the city limits but did not kill any people. However, 6 people were killed as a result of rocket fire from Allied bombers that strafed Budapest during Operation Barbarossa.

In 1814-1815, General James Halleck led an expedition against Fort McLean on the Monongahela River which destroyed much of what remained of that fortifications after a yearlong siege. This event helped spur development around Fort McLean as well as construction of other military installations throughout Frederick County during this time period including Court House and White House Barracks. These developments included new homes for many Viennese families who had moved there during those difficult times. One such home which still stands today is called Greeneville Court which was built by David Ewing in 1824 following his purchase of one million acres along the Potomac River from Lord Dunmore commanding it at that point beginning with his invasion of Maryland in 1825). With new transportation technologies becoming available during these times (railroads came about during this time), more people started moving into Vienna from all over America due to its good economic situation and easy access to major markets like Baltimore and Washington D.C.. After World War II ended, Austria became Communist Yugoslavia whileVienna continued enjoying some level of autonomy until it became an integral part of Nazi Germany after Kristallnacht (9/11/1945).
