Suffolk, Virginia is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The population was 10,857 at the 2010 census. It sits on the James River and is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. Suffolk was founded in 1624 by Sir William Button, 1st Baronet as "Newport" after his victory over the French at Monmouth Court. The name change to Suffolk in 1651 when King Charles II granted it to Admiral John Smith for creating a navy. In 1701, Colonel George Washington established himself here and built a mansion called Mount Vernon which still stands today. In 1800, Thomas Jefferson bought Mount Vernon from George Washington for $27,000 dollars and made it his home. The town rapidly grew with its many industries including brickmaking; pottery; shoe manufacturing; printing; soap making; cattle raising and railroad building. By 1870, significant numbers of Irish immigrants had settled in Suffolk and African Americans had come to work in various mills throughout the early 20th century. As recently as 1980s, however, most residents were white majority or Anglo-Saxon Protestants with some minorities such as Jews and Catholics living among them. The town experienced an influx of Hispanics during Hurricane Katrina when upwards of 55% of its citizens were Spanish speaking people who fled their homes due to flooding caused by that storm alone. Aftermath efforts have since been initiated by both the local government and private sector organizations to help those affected by this recent event as well as others that have occurred within Suffolk over the years such as natural disasters like Tropical Storm Floyd in 2005 or wildfires in 2013 which destroyed homes and businesses downtown respectively. Today's economy is driven largely by technology companies headquartered within nearby Petersburg but also more traditional sectors such as grocery stores (including several large anchor store locations), professional services (lawyers/accountants/etc.), small business owners (who provide goods & services not typically found elsewhere), transportation (especially gas stations) and tourism (particularly events related to golf).

In 1838, the town became a part of Confederate Virginia and remained so until 1865 when it returned to the United States under the Union banner. The first post office in Suffolk was established in 1764. The present post office building was built in 1903 and is located at 311 South Main Street. The cornerstone of the current building was laid on December 8, 1903 by Mayor James J. Haines Jr.
