Suffolk was one of the original counties in Virginia. The area now includes the towns of Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Mattawa. The County was created on July 4, 1781 from parts of Caroline and Dinwiddie Counties. In 1801 it gained a town charter named Warwick which is now known as Norfolk. On November 3, 1860 the county lost its town charter to Suffolk Naval Air Station and became an all-county county with that name on January 1, 1961.
