Suffolk, Virginia was first settled in the early 1600s by English colonists. The area now known as Suffolk was part of what is now Norfolk County and its capital was Norwich. In 1624, a charter was granted to the town of Ipswich for £3 per year. By 1627, there were over 100 settlers in Ipswich. At the same time, a grant of land within present-day Suffolk County was made to John Raynolds for $5 per acre. In 1638, General Edmund Kirby-Brown moved his army from Worcester to nearby Suffolk and pillaged through the area. This led to calls for revenge by the local community and Kirby-Brown was ultimately caught and hanged at Exeter Plains near modern day Framingham. On July 13th, 1775, during American Revolutionary War (1775-83), British forces under General George Washington besieged Newport News Castle on Sir Francis Drake's flagship HMS Royal James while Patriot forces loyal to King George III defended the castle. The British force eventually withdrew after surrendering their cannons and stores inside the fortification.) In 1837, Suffolk became one of four counties in Virginia created as part of this state’s westernulsion program following a request from former Governor Thomas Jefferson. The county seat remained Norwich until 1917 when it was moved to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where it remains today (see also: Portsmouth Naval Shipyard). For many years large areas of southeastern Suffolk were devoted exclusively to textile production with mills located throughout much of rural communities along river valleys between Ipswich and Norwich; these towns still retain some vestige of their traditional agricultural methods which include raising livestock and growing corn, beans, potatoes etc., however increasingly these activities are supplemented by services such as health care and small business incubation/finance/commerce services
