By 1860, there were more than 1,000 farmers in Suffolk; many worked on large plantations that produced cotton, tobacco, corn (maize), wheat, soybeans and hogs. During World War II, Suffolk sustained heavy damage from Japanese bombing raids during which over two-thirds of its homes were destroyed or damaged. After V-E Day in 1945, Essex Corporation erected a large white American flagpole in front of St John's Episcopal Church to celebrate America's victory over Nazi Germany and Lend Lease donations totaling $7 million had been made by American citizens throughout all 50 U.S. states as well as Canada since 1942! A new high school opened at 8th & I Streets NW near Winchester College (now University Of Mary Washington) on October 7th 1960 with grades 9-12 when then Superintendent Dr JK Sellers announced "it will be hard enough to keep up with our students without adding an extra grade." On November 1st 1960 when Mr Gentry announced "It has been decided that girls should not attend High School until they are eighteen", many parents objected to this decision which caused plans for a primary/secondary school called "Plymouth" which would have seated 1400 students across three buildings at what is now Depot Square Shopping Center to be abandoned due to lack of funds while another high school - "Norfolk" - opened just two weeks later with grades 9-12 on October 11th 1961 uniting both Plymouth Elementary School (originally called Sutton Academy) and Hampshire Middle School into one entity becoming Norfolk County's first comprehensive high school making it available to all students no matter their age! This event marks also the beginning of organized sports being offered through public schools within Norfolk County! On July 21st 1978 voters approved Measure 2 creating Faulkner Park which covers 64 acres including 12 tennis courts、5 racquetball courts、3 football fields\/3 softball fields/1 soccer field plus a training ground for military veterans Following close consultation with local organizations such as The Portsmouth Soccer Club Inc., Portsmouth YMCA & First Selections Soccer clubs Inc., members voted unanimously “Yes” on August 22nd 1978 approving plans for land reclamation following flooding caused by Hurricane Sandyilday afternoon thunderstorms).
