In 1749, Scottish commandant General Jeffrey Amherst landed at Portsmouth on HMS Bounty with 400 men and women following his expedition against French spoilers off Canada’s Bayeux Peninsula. Heading westward along the then-mainland Chesapeake Bay towards New England, Amherst discovered an uninhabited region now known as Southampton (now Hampton). He named this land Terra Nova after one of his ships - HMS Discovery - which he sighted off Cape Henry near present-day Portsmouth on July 29th., 1748. On October 10th., 1750 – less than two weeks after his landfall - Amherst ordered all British forces within easy striking distance (including those stationed at Portsmouth) to take up arms against France “in order that we may avoid any dangerous consequences ensuing from their hostilities with us;”[1] And so began what would soon become one of most famous militaries in history: The Patriot War against France begun by Britains colonies outside metropolitan France
