There are also numerous small businesses and agricultural operations scattered throughout the county. Minor industries include tourism ( prevalent among Hampton Roads Naval Station) and information technology services provided by Nortel Networkspecs Incorporated/Nortel Wireless Incorporated/.
The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Suffolk, Virginia is the history of the area. The region has a long and proud history, dating back to the time before humans even lived in what is now Suffolk County. Some of the earliest evidence for human activity in Suffolk can be found in archaeological excavations conducted on Long Island by Professor George Fenton in 1878. These findings included pieces of bone and other artifacts that demonstrated early human activity in this part of the world. In 1624, John Smith discovered saltpeter mines near modern-day Suffolk City. This discovery led to a great deal of development within the area around present-day Suffolk County. The saltpeter mine became one of the most important sources for income for colonists in this region and helped spur economic growth throughout the eighteenth century.
