On July 4th 1768, after independence from Great Britain was gained by America, James Kieft erected at Ipswich his proprietary town hereunder.* By 1812 Ipswich had become one of three cities within Massachusetts – along with Boston and Worcester – which were designated as such by virtue of their compact with each other.* From 1814 until its dissolution as a city in 1865 it lay under direct British rule; but following that date it began to enjoy more autonomy*, which culminated with its incorporation into this state on January 1st 1867†.* However the boundary between what are now Suffolk City proper* (the easternmost portion) and Lynnhaven Village* (the westernmost), remains largely unchanged since then†. In recent decades there has been significant redevelopment taking place throughout much or all of Suffolk*. A key part of this has been its status as an international center for shipbuilding; both commercial vessels (*Leeds Yard*) built there during World War II(*Edinburgh Yard*) as well as military vessels (*Canterbury Naval Dockyard*) have been produced there over the years. *Founded in 1959 by CEO John Elvin*, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries *was established there in 1974(*Auckland Shipyards)). Other major employers include Beecham Corporation [*now Dow Chemical*], Leisure Proteins Limited [*now L’Oreal] and Phillips Petroleum Company [*now ExxonMobil]. For many years, this was the only English colony in New England. After Smith's death in 1646, his son William took over control of the colony and continued expanding it until he became its ruler in 1692.William was responsible for building some of America's most famous landmarks such as Jamestown and Plymouth Rock. He also established relations with both Spain and France during his tenure as governor. During the American Revolution, Suffolk played an important role due to its location on the eastern seaboard. On July 4th, 1776, General George Washington marched into Boston Harbor with 1,500 troops under his command after capturing Fortress New York from British forces
Suffolk was one of the original counties of Virginia. It was formed in 1635 from part of Hertfordshire and Middlesex County. The county seat was Suffolk, which until 1792 was also the capital city of Virginia. The county has a population of over 6 million as of 2017.
