In 1837 when President Andrew Johnson designated Yorktown as the capital of Virginia he also proposed that Suffolk be made a separate county with its own government with landowning families enjoying preferential treatment over poor tenant farmers. The proposal failed but led to Henry Clay's effort to create an entire new state out of eastern Maryland which eventually succeeded thanks to Union troops occupying Yorktown during Confederate General Robert E Lee's evacuation attempt on April 9th 1865 after Fort Sumter surrendered.] During World War II more than 60% of all jobs in Massachusetts were done by Americans living in or near Suffolk; this generated significant wartime production values including munitions plants at Fordham (now part of Brooklyn), Lancaster (now part of Newark) and Westinghouse Laboratories in Elizabeth City (now Petersburg).
