The town of Suffolk, Virginia was founded in 1722 by the merger of two small settlements- Westport and East Hampton. Suffolk is a town in the U.S. state of Virginia. The population was 3,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petersburg-Richmond, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Suffolk was founded by English settlers in 1629 and named for Sir John Lyte of Ipswich, England who had died in 1586 while commandant of Portsmouth Harbor. The town's first settler was George Washington who arrived with his family in 1784. The town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the antebellum period because it offered refuge to runaway slaves and other fugitive criminals from Virginia and North Carolina. A schoolhouse, Methodist church, post office, jail and water works were built in Suffolk between 1812 and 1830; all except for the waterworks were destroyed by fire in 1874 following a typhoid pandemic that struck Virginia then Norfolk hard. In 1907, Suffolk became one of several independent towns located within Richmond County when that county was created from portions of Prince Edward County and Rappahannock County. In 1951, Suffolk annexed what was then parts of Henrico County including Fallston which made it one of six independent towns located within Richmond County (the others being Colonial Heights (1924)), Hanover Township (1928), Mechanicsburg (1935), Powhatan Heights (1945) and West Pointe Manor (1959). In 1976, all but two of those six towns were combined into Richmond-Falls Church metropolitan area under then-Governor James Fenton's Executive Order No. 244 which established Greater Richmond Regional Transit Authority with its headquarters at Falls Church City Hall/U W Smith College Library there since 1978 According to the 2000 United States Census there were 4,014 people residing in Suffolktown & unincorporated areas making up 1%of their total population; however this number has since decreased as housing prices have begun to increase throughout much of rural Virginias surrounding Suffolktown - especially around Blacksburg & Harrisonburg where single family homes are now regularly selling for over $200K+. With regards to race/ethnicity: according to 2006 American Community Survey data only 7%of residents self identify as black or African American compared to 34% white or Caucasian - a decrease from 48% when America Online moved its corporate HQ out west some years earlier! While most residents seem content with their current lifestyles - many continue to support local businesses such as Pinnacle Foods & Chili’s while also protesting against high priced development taking place just outside their community boundaries Many people forget about how much history takes place right outside their windows everyday... every day!
