Staunton, Virginia is a small town in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Potomac County, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1775 as an agricultural community on what is now called Staunton Pike by Colonel John Forbes and his wife Susanna Forbes. The first post office was established in 1776. In 1801, Staunton became a separate town under the name of Friendship (now West Friendship). In 1824, it became another separate town, this time named after General James K. Polk because he had been elected governor of Virginia that year. From 1849 until 1861, Staunton was part of Prince George's County; following the secession of Confederate States of America from the Union, it became a part of newly created Maryland Territory through which fugitive slaves were allowed to move. When American troops entered Maryland to suppress slavery during the American Civil War, many in Staunton supported them and some even moved to join them; however most residents remained loyal to their former Confederate state government. In 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 10984 which ordered all slaveholders within three miles (5 km) of any military installation must free their slaves within two years or face punishment), many people living in rural areas near Washington D.C., such as Staunton and Potomac Junction decided not to comply with orders and remained slaveholders until after the war ended. After Reconstruction began in 1877-1880 following African Americans' re-entry into society through education and other programs sponsored by white Programsmers like Booker T Washington and WPA agencies across America - many African Americans chose to stay put instead of moving away - many whites decided that they no longer wanted anything to do with rural black neighbors who still owned land and cattle they could use or exploit for themselves while they lived elsewhere - so in 1890s StaunTON went back into decline as more blacks started moving away again followed by few whites returning home except for a few merchants whose businesses thrived off agriculture adjacent to black communities where cotton fields once grew

Staunton, Virginia is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Hugh Staunton in 1777 as part of the Colony of Virginia. The original portion of Staunton became known as "Hugh's Town" because Hugh Staunton lived there from 1777 to 1781 and built many of the first homes in the area. In 1801, the town was renamed for General Robert E. Lee after he won an engagement at Monacacy Court House near present-day Petersburg. In 1864, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded Prince William County and burned much of what is now Staunton before withdrawing southward. Later that year Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Stafford County and marched into Prince William County to meet Early while he was still west of Petersburg on 14 July 1865 near present-day Manassas Junction. At this point Early retreated back east through Loudoun County into Northumberland County where he destroyed most of his forces before fleeing northward across the Potomac River to Maryland on 7 October 1865. The town site is now within Quincysville Park (an open space located adjacent to Interstate 95) and includes portions of three large plantations: John Randolph's land which dates back to 1619; Harry Hammons' land dating back to 1835; and John Arundel's land dating back to 1748/9). These plantations were all confiscated by Confederate authorities during the war but have been restored as part of Quincysville Park. A number of local businesses continue today such as The grocery store (owned by Dickenson Bros., Inc.), several restaurants including Joe's Crab Shack (formerly called Joe Gibbs', later changed), One Stop Shop gas station (now C&C Rentals), a post office which has been in operation since 1872, two churches - First Baptist Church & Methodist Episcopal Church and Second Baptist Church - both built around 1800s; and two high schools - Prince George High School & Mount Vernon High School - both built around 1930s/40s nearby also include parts from other plantations taken over during the war including Harry Hammons' home which served as Headquarters for Confederate Forces SouthernVirginia Military District headquarters complex located just east off I-95 between US 12 & I-495
In 1802, the town of Staunton was founded by William Preston and his family. The first store in the town was built on the current site of Veterans Memorial Hospital. In 1811, a school was built and used until it burned down in 1893. A cotton gin was also built in 1812 and operated until it burned down in 1865. In 1898, a post office was established at Staunton and remained in operation until 1974.
