The town was founded by James Staunton in 1781 as a frontier post on his land west of the Rappahannock River. In 1812, it became an incorporated town under the name of Staunton Bridge. In 1838, John Hays moved to Staunton from Harrisonburg and became its first Mayor. A year later, he resigned due to health concerns and died two months later at age 72. William Ewart Blair took office as Mayor in 1840 and served until his death in 1849. Elijah Lovejoy served as Mayor from 1850 until his death in 1860. One of the first things Lovejoy did when he came to office was build a school house which still stands today on Main Street in Staunton. He also built a jail and other infrastructure for the town including roads and bridges
Staunton was founded in 1748 by Colonel John Forbes and his wife, Susanna. It grew rapidly due to its natural site, rich farmland, and strategic location on the Shenandoah River. The town had a population of about 100 people by 1800. In 1834, Staunton became the capital of West Virginia.
