It is part of the Washington-Alexandria-Arlington, DC-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by George Washington and his troops during the American Revolution. In 1865–66, General Robert Ewell built two forts near Staunton: Fort Nottoway and Fort Donelson.
