Staunton, Virginia is home to the Blue Ridge Optical Industry Association (BROA) and over 50 years of optical history. The city was founded in 1892 by two physicians, Dr. John Walthall and Dr. George Washington Carver, as a small community providing health care for the surrounding farmers. In 1903, Staunton became an incorporated town and in 1916 it became a city with its own mayor and council members. In 1933, the United States Office of Defense Intelligence established the first photo intelligence detachment in America outside of Washington D.C., using optical equipment provided by General Electric Company's Research Division in Staunton.
