Staunton is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 11,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Staunton was Captain John Smith on 10 April 1607 when he and his party of Englishmen explored the Potomac River from upstream to its junction with the Rappahannock River. Smith named it "New Anglia" after his home country of England and called the river "the Potomac". A post office has been in operation in Staunton since 1824. The community began as a small settlement onuda that grew around an agricultural goods depot established by Colonel George Rogers Clark in 1784 during the French and Indian War for soldiers directed against British forces marching via Fort McHenry into Maryland Territory (now Virginia). In 1800, Colonel James Acheson renamed it Clarendon after himself, one of three commissioners appointed by President Thomas Jefferson to negotiate treaties with Native American tribes living along the Ohio River valley including those at present-day Cincinnati and Toledo. By 1802, there were over 30 residences in different stages of construction with two stores and a schoolhouse serving approximately 350 residents; however, by 1805 only 12 dwellings remained contributing factors to growth which accelerated following construction of a canal connecting Charlottesville with Richmond through what is now downtown Staunton In 1827–1828, General Robert Ewell laid out streetscape plans for what would become downtown Staunton resulting in street names such as Grosvenor Street (later simply Ewell), Jackson Avenue (later Cameron Avenue), Court House Road/Government Road (later US 1/US 20) and much later Mason Drive/Moses Drive today’s Main Street Extension just east of I-66 exit 7B southbound near Winchester College – making this one of only five places in America where Streetscape Plans have been preserved as Historic Districts sporting similar names today! Downtown Staunton also includes some remarkable examples of Federal architecture such as John Marshall House built between 1792 and 1796 followed soon thereafter by The Samuel Adams Brewery built between 1830-1832; all are listed on National Register Of Historic Places
Staunton was founded in 1757 by surveyors John Marshall and James Robertson. The town grew rapidly, becoming a major transportation center for the surrounding area. In 1801, Staunton became a state capital and was renamed Richmond. It reverted to its original name in 1871.
