Staunton, Virginia is a small town located in south central Virginia. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains region. Staunton is named after General George Washington and his father General James Forrest Staunton who fought in the American Revolution. The original homesteaders were farmers who grew corn, wheat, tobacco, potatoes and other vegetables. In 1802 they built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. They soon realized that they could not live off their land alone so they started to sell goods they produced to others in the area. In 1807 they purchased of land from Colonel John Marshall which includes present day Main Street and parts of Court House Road and Huntingdon Avenue. This allowed them to build a larger home with out having to worry about the elements or having to share crops with others. By 1830, many people had moved into the community including some who had come from as far away as Boston and New York City! The first school was erected on Washingtons lands in 1811-12 by Reverend Nathaniel Bacon (1771-1854). A second school was also erected but it burned down in 1832 due to an accidental fire! Later that same year, Revs Benjamin Hawkins (1800-1867), Jesse Blythe (1797-1864) and James Whitehead (1799-1865) each set up schools here for two days each week when there was no school available in town! Reverend Bacon also taught reading and writing classes for children! The first store opened here around 1800 by Capt Thomas Metcalfe! Over time more stores were open including one run by Mrs Caroline Granger ( proprietor ) which operated from 1821 until her death in 1865! Mrs Granger donated most of her property to make this location possible!! Today Main Street between High & Low Streets features numerous businesses such as banks, convenience stores, restaurants etc!!! There are also several churches including First Baptist Church which dates back over 300 years!!!

The first permanent settler in what is now Staunton was Nicholas Botkin who arrived on October 15th, 1775. He and his family purchased land from the Native Americans and built a cabin on what is now North Main Street. One of Botkin's daughters married John Sevier who also founded Staunton as an agricultural community with a grocery store and other business ventures. In 1853, when James Buchanan became President of the United States, he ordered all public buildings to be moved from downtown to Washington D.C., which resulted in much loss for businesses in Staunton because their customers were no longer able to access government services orIENTationality through main streets like Market Street or South Main Street. However, by 1865 many businesses had reopened due toPresident Abraham Lincoln's Executive Order Restoration of Government Services generally known as "Equalization". In 1906 the legislature called for a study on creating new townships within Page County and after recommendations by Commission on Geographic Names proposed that Northampton be named after General George Washington while Shenandoah should be named after Lewis & Clark Expedition members William Clark (the explorer) and James Lewis (the surveyor). On February 13th 1907 votersapproved changing both names to honor then-Governor Hiram Warner Knightley who recommended that both names be given to create one new township - Stanton Township - which would become part of Page County upon its creation following statehood in 1933. Today much of historicStanton has been preserved as part of Page County Parks including botanical gardens located off West Main Street; old courthouse square made into a shopping mall with restaurants, cafes and art galleries; Northampton High School; Soldier Field where professional sports games are played annually during November; Negro League Baseball Park built next door to Thompson Stadium which hosted some notable players such as Jackie Robinson; Alice Roberts House Museum which tells the story about life near Central Avenue between 1955-1960 when Alice Roberts ran her house/shop down that street serving African American residents although they were not allowed inside white homes without special permission until 1978 when they made history again by becoming open to all citizens regardless race or ethnicity The town straddles two major industry veins: agriculture and machine parts manufacturing. For more than 100 years starting with Nicholas Botkin's arrival there were several farmers operating large plantations along Gunpowder Alley which provided slaves for picking cotton and working on rural roads throughout Randolph County until abolition followed emancipation in early 1800s. From 1830-1850 there was also significant production at Iuka Machine Works located east off Interstate 95 south of Richmond before it closed its doors around 1930 due to competition from Japanese companies hereabouts beginning shortly thereafter World War II led directly by Richmond based Bethlehem steel plants taking over production at IukaMachineWorks subsequently leading ultimately to displacementof local blacks workforce across most southeast USA industrial areas concurrent with Rust Belt Revival process whereby jobs commingled easily wit high skill blue collar workaday employment opportunities rather than being segregated along racial lines Following war period reversal this began gradual migration backinto town center area characterized initiallyby increasing number af black families moving into single family dwellings newly constructed since late 1960s primarilyin central business district adjacentto schools thenceforth commonly referredto simplyas districts
Staunton was founded in 1737 by Captain John Staunton and his wife, Martha. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, thanks in part to its strategic location on the James River. By 1810, Staunton had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1822, the town was made an incorporated village and remained so until 1979.
