Staunton, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 16,898 at the 2010 census. It served as a US military post until 1865 when it reverted to civilian control and was used for agricultural purposes until 1955 when it became an airbase for the USAF Flying Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base.

It is the county seat of Loudoun County and one of six counties in Northern Virginia. Staunton is known for its agricultural products, including apples, grapes, wheat, corn, and soybeans. The area that now comprises Staunton was first settled by English colonists in 1607 as part of a large plantation known as "Old Hundred". In 1777, when George Washington's army burned White Oaks Plantation to prevent French forces from taking it over as their new headquarters during the American Revolution, General James Cornwallis moved his forces from Fredericktown to Staunton to take advantage of this strategic location. In 1814-1815 Lt. Colonel Nathaniel Banks's brigade under Ulysses S. Grant fought a series of battle near Fairfax Court House against Confederate forces commanded by Jubal Early and Robert E Lee. During these engagements Banks gained renown for his coolheaded leadership and tactical brilliance which led many people to call him "the unsung general." It was not until after Staunton had become an industrial center thanks to its production of apples and other agricultural exports that it began receiving recognition as a major cultural center in Northern Virginia due to such luminaries as Doc Watson (founder of Folkestone College), Alice Paul (national activist), John Lennon (former Beatle), and others who grew up here or spent time here while attending college or working abroad. On July 4th, 1984 the town celebrated its centennial with a parade through downtown followed by an outdoor concert at White Oak Park courtesy of Philadelphia-based rock band Jethro Tull headlined by Gov't Mule along with local brass bands from around town including Bluegrass Unlimited and Cockburn Unitedaires! In early 2006 Mayor Harry Thomas announced plans for $6 million worth of improvements to downtown streetscape which would include resurfacing all wheeled traffic lanes facing southbound I-95; widening sidewalks northward from Market Street eastward into Commercial Drive; installation of light poles throughout the city; dual pavement markings on pedestrian crossings; planting/installation on several blocks inside/outside central business district; addition/replacement of several historical streetlights throughout downtown; Renovation/updating existing fire hydrants Downtown
