The history of the gun light is a long and tangled one. In Staunton, Virginia, there are numerous examples of guns that were used to illuminate areas during night operations. The first gun light was developed in 1839 by Major John Ladd in response to the problem of darkness on military campaigns. It consisted of a small light bulb fitted into a socket on the barrel of a rifle and was used for target practice or illumination purposes. In 1847, Colonel James Fenton purchased two American made muzzle loading rifles with dark glass sights and replaced the smallbulb with a large globe lens mounted on an armature driven by an horse-power motor. This new gun light became known as the Fenton Globe Gun Light. It was first used in combat in 1848 when General James Averell employed it during his Second Seminole War campaign against Native Americans in Florida. Although originally designed for use with firearms, this type of gun light also proved useful for illuminating pathways during night operations and later became popular among artillerymen and other similar personnel working at night under difficult conditions. Somegun lights even featured builtin flashlights! As technology improved, so too did the design of gun lights. By 1888, four different types had been created: The early model Riflescope Gun Light (sometimes called simply “Gunsight”), Type III Gun Lamp (developed by George Stephenson), Type IV Gun Lamp (manufactured by Hetzel) and finally the more recent Type V Gun Lamp which features an adjustable focusing range to emit both natural daylight and artificial whitelight sources such as headlights or floodlights! Today, many people continue to use gunsights as part of their nighttime activities including police officers, firefighters, security guards and others who need reliable illumination at all times while on duty or participating in outdoor activities such as camping or fishing.

In 1751, when George Washington began construction on Mount Vernon, he ordered one of his slaves, Thomas Hopkinson, to take care of a cow on the property where he would live for eight years. The cow proved to be very friendly and got to know Washington quite well. When America gained independence from Great Britain in 1776, Hopkinson became an important member of Washington's personal staff as a steward and driver. Washington also bought land near Staunton and built a cabin there in 1784 as his private residence known as Mount Vernon-Hancock House (later renamed Mount Vernon). In 1802, Congress granted him an act granting him patent 2nd class for 1/2 mile square extending along present day US Route 50 southward from US Route 24 across Cedar Creek into Fairfax County; this area became known asMount Vernon- Gordonsville Road (now Old Dominion Parkway). In 1868–69, General Ulysses S Grant visited Staunton by way of Lynchburg before moving northward through West Virginia towards crossing the Potomac river at Harpers Ferry for the Union Army’s opening campaign against Confederate General Robert E Lee. The history of Staunton, VA can be traced back to the founding of the town in 1764. The area that now makes up Staunton was part of Fairfax County until 1776, when it was merged intoVA. At the time, Virginia was a single state and there were no localities within VA. The town's first settler, John Smith, came from Augusta, Georgia in 1764. In 1782, James Kenedy purchased 640 acres of land east of present-day Staunton and laid out a new village on the site. Kenedy named his community "Staunton." In 1802, John Fenton bought 1/4 mile north of present-day Staunton from James Kenedy for $500. Fenton laid out a new village called "Fentontown." This name honor Fenton's ancestor who had founded Augusta in 1684. In 1811, Thomas Wofford became one of America's first entrepreneurs. Wofford built two mills on the Rappahannock River which he named "Woffordville" and "Petersburg." He also developed other properties in the area including 3 miles east of present-day Staunton along the Potomac River where he erected a large brick house known as Woffords Manor (now known as Chantilly). Wofford died in 1828 but his holdings continued to grow through acquisition by others until they were sold to George Washington Carver for $1 million in 1923. Carver used his profits to establish several schools and agricultural programs throughout VA. Today only a few remnants remain from Woffords Mansion - including an upstairs bedroom window that still displays carved initials “GW” above its glass panes; and part of an external wall near Old Dominion University that is home to Carvers Museum & Library
