Staunton is a town in northwestern Virginia, United States. The population was 11,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the WestVirginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Staunton was Nicholas Coles who founded a farm on the Potomac River about 1787. Other early settlers included John Smith and his brother James who both died in infancy. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne's army passed through Staunton on its way to battle against Native Americans at Monocacy Ridge. Many of the men from Staunton went into military service and many homes still stand today as old barracks or home-schooling institutions for local children during this time period. The town of Staunton was incorporated on December 1, 1881 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly under the name "Andersonville". The name change came about because Andersonville had been established as a village by Act No. 590 of 1872 but it had not yet been renamed after General Edmund Kirby Smith (1810-83), hero of that Battle of Antietam which helped lead to American independence and subsequent reconstruction in America following the Civil War. On July 15, 1902, a fire destroyed most of downtown with only three buildings remaining standing; one being used as a grocery store until 1922 when it burned down again due to arsonists. During World War II much production took place at nearby Parkland munitions plant including plans for V-2 rockets which were designed to launch from England into Europe, providing aid during World War II and afterwards for Allied countries such as Canada and Australia; however no missiles were ever built from these plans though some parts were made into model aircraft known as Hawkfires). Today much industrial activity takes place here including metal fabricating companies such as Dupont Corporation which manufactures tanks for NATO; chemical companies like DuPont Phelps Dodge Chemical Company which produce gasoline and other products related to plastics; software engineering firms such as Microsoft Corporation; agricultural production giant Monsanto AG with operations across multiple states including Herefordshire, Kentucky; retail stores like Dick's Sporting Goods Ltd.; restaurants like Tim Hortons Ltd., Starbucks Coffee Inc., Pizza Hut Inc., Wendy's International Holdings Co.; real estate development interests like Equity Residential LLC.; while also hosting several large annual events such as NASCAR's Tudor Championship race weekend or major festivals throughout the year including Powhatan Indian Festival & Arts Festival
