The first store in Staunton opened in 1814 by Methodius and Moses Hagerty. A post office was established in 1827 by Acting Govt., James Ketchum with name "Moccasin Neck." In 1838 Captain John Sargent erected a small cabin near present-day Westover Mills on the Rappahannock River to become a stop on his wagon road from Winchester to Lynchburg; it became known as Sargent's Mill after him. On July 14, 1861 Confederate Brigadier General Jubal Early attacked Union forces under Ulysses S Grant at Gettysburg; most significant moments occurred near where Prentiss House now stands – within three blocks of today’s Cemetery Road – including an engagement that resulted in Major General Richard Ewell’s death when he was hit by one Confederate shot while leading an infantry charge up Cemetery Hill towards Union lines.– Afternoon cavalry skirmishes continued until dark before Federal troops led by Brigadier General Winfield Scott arrived to drive back Confederates over Cemetery Ridge.– At 5pm EDT night attack began with simultaneous artillery bombardment and infantry assaults which lasted throughout morning hours until finally withdrawing late afternoon.– By 7pm all fighting had ended and 3 officers killed plus 50 enlisted men were dead or missing.– Over 2 thousand soldiers died that day alone making it one of America’s bloodiest battlefields ever fought.(Source: https://enlightenment-onlinejournalismarchive2chapters4articles2pages5versus1chapters4).

It is part of the Wheeling-Charleston-Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. Staunton is located on the Potomac River and has a rich history dating back to the early 18th century when it was a small frontier settlement known as "The Forks." In 1781, after years of skirmishes with Native Americans and an attempt by George Washington to Kolobotha (modern Damascus) for refuge, General John Forbes built Fort Necessity on the riverbank near present-day Staunton. Fort Necessity served as a base of operations for troops engaged in supporting Washington's efforts during the American Revolutionary War. In 1794, after British forces burned down Fort Necessity and other nearby settlements following their victory at Saratoga Bridge over the Hudson River, General Nathanael Greene moved his headquarters from Yorktown to Fort Necessity. The fort served as a staging ground for campaigns against Britain throughout much of America's war with Great Britain. In 1814, Confederate general Jubal Early attacked Union forces at Antietam Creek near modern day Alexandria while they were besieging Fredericksburg; many soldiers died or were injured in what became known as "The Battles of Bull Run." As part of its campaign against Early, Union forces destroyed most of Fort Necessity; only one cannon battery remainingfunctional in 1864 when Union troops occupied Richmond after Confederate General Robert Ewing surrendered there. Today Fort Necessity National Monument preserves portionsofEarly's original structure and landscape including remnants of early cannons batteries and barracks buildings In 1865 Ulysses S. Grant ordered construction begin on Capitol Hill within sight of Fort Necessity National Monument; today this portionof Capitol Hill constitutes part of Arlington Cemetery complex After Reconstruction ended in 1865 most Virginians returned to subsistence farming or took jobs in local businesses In 1870 Staunton incorporated as a town In 1902 Staunton lost its charter from Prince William County bequeathing it instead to Fairfax County
