Scope mounts in Salem, Virginia date back to at least the 1800s. In 1810, Captain John J. Smith of the British Royal Navy established a lighthouse in Salem and required all ships that entered the harbor to come equipped with a sextant and a telescope. The first Scope mount was erected on Portsmouth Wharf for use by sailors on board HMS Dolphin. By 1825, there were three types of Scope mounts: FoldingMounts, which were made out of heavy wood with two legs that could be collapsed for easy transport; GlobeMounts, which were made from metal framework with four arms that could be rotated to give different views; and Cage Mounts, which consisted of two round poles connected by an iron band. In 1828, Captain John Horseshoe recommended the installation of Telescope Poles on all new Lighthouses as they would provide an improved view from high atop buildings while sailing in port. These Telescopes became known as "Horseshoes." In 1835-36, Captain Charles Wetherbee installed a new type of scope mount called the "Telescope Pole." This mount consisted of a long pole mounted on a sturdy post surrounding an observation window at the top of the mast. When advanced into higher elevations or during navigation trials, this type of scope mount was used to provide superior views over land or water areas without having to rely on other equipment such as binoculars or radar scans. By 1840-41, almost every ship in Portsmouth Harbor had been equipped with one or more Scope mounts making it possible for sailors to image any distant object within their range using this technology. By 1850-51 there were only five types of Scope mounts remaining: FoldingMounts (made out of heavy wood), GlobeMounts (made from metal framework with four arms), Cage Mounts (two round poles connected by an iron band), Tracker Mountings (mounted directly onto ship anchors) and Radar/Opticalmountings (mounted onto transmitters). On January 9, 1776, General George Washington and his army arrived in nearby Alexandria to attack British forces besieging Richmond. A day later, Washington led an assault on Fort York which destroyed much of Kingston thought to be key toBritish control over southern Virginia. In all, 10 battles were fought during this period as Patriot forces attempted to retake what they saw as rightfully theirs: Boston (December 26), Mount Vernon (January 14), Saratoga Springs ( February 17), New York City (March 15–17). Aftermath of Revolutionary War: The Treaty of Paris ended hostilities between Britain and America on July 4th, 1800; however many items such as cannons captured during the Revolution were still retained by both countries until 1802 when they were finally melted down along with other antiquities at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in NH

In 1692, Salem was burned by the Puritans as part of their religious persecution campaign. The town eventually recovered, but not until after it was annexed by Virginia in 1821.
