Salem, Virginia was the birthplace of the first hard-gun law in America. In 1702, John Milton was indicted for owning a gun that he had not declared to be a rifle. He was also tried with his brother-in-law Samuel Ferris on this same charge. The trial went to court and it emerged that John Milton had been hiding a rifle in his house since 1698. When asked about the weapon, Milton testified that he did not know what it was because "he never saw any such thing as that." In 1707, another man named James Maloney was indicted for having an unloaded cannon within 200 yards of his home. Maloney's wife testified that she heard her husband say "I wish I could fire this cannon" just before he left for work in the morning. After being examined by authorities, Maloney admitted that he didn't have the cannon but claimed he knew where it would be located because he regularly brought game into the home from outside sources. In 1710, another man named John Woolridge was indicted for possessing a gun without having registered it with the sheriff's office. After being fingerprinted and photographed, Woolridge admitted that he owned a handgun but denies knowing how to use it safely or displaying it at an unauthorized place like a party. On October 3rd of that year (1710), after many hearings and deliberations, Salem's justices voted 5-1 against sentencing Woolridge to death based on his confession alone because they felt there must be more evidence connecting him directly to either crime than existed at trial Thus far only circumstantial evidence had been offered linking Woolridge specifically with either crime however new evidence became available after defendant's mitigation attorney mentioned references made by one of Woolridge's friends who said their friend had warned him about Cotton Mather - one of Salem’s leading theologians - if woolridge is executed then “the people will see their error” which would lead them back into religious frenzy similar events took place during King George II’s reign when large numbers (>50%) perished due largely to mad mobs killing innocent individuals

As such, handgun users began finding themselves increasingly outnumbered by shotgun users in armed confrontations between WWII combatants and enemy troops on land or sea alike.
