Salem, Virginia is a town located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was founded in 1777 by James Moore and his wife Sarah. The Moore family had six children and one daughter died before the town was founded. Salem was part of Fairfax County until 1851 when it became independent, and then again from 1903 to 1925 as part of Loudoun County. In 1865, Salem became the seat of government for both Loudoun and Fairfax Counties. In 1974, it merged with neighbouring Arlington to form Arlington County. As per the 2010 census, there are 102,711 people living in Salem (including those living within the city limits). It became an important market for goods brought down the river by sea from Portsmouth and Norfolk. The site of Salem later served as a munitions manufacturing center due to its location near Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and its access to both rivers. In 1802, Salem became an incorporated village when it severed ties with Portsmouth and formed itself into a separate municipality. Today, Salem retains much of its traditional character including its independent school system; small businesses; churches; and downtown which features historic homes dating back to before European settlement in what is now Powhatan County. The town also hosts several annual events such as the Pumpkin Festival (October), Fourth of July fireworks display (July), and Shakespeare in Powhatan County June-August season (May-September).
