The Salem Gun Club was founded in 1881. The club has been meeting monthly ever since. In 1896, the club voted to become a national organization and adopted the name American Rifleman. For many years, the club met at different locations in Salem, but it moved its meetings to the old Masonic Temple in 1922. In 1934, the club changed its name to the National Rifle Association (NRA). Salem, Virginia is a town in Prince Edward County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Prince Edward County and the largest community in the county. Salem was established by Europeans in 1736 as part of Henrico Colony. The colony was abandoned in 1738 and its residents relocated to Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1750, Salem became part of Caroline County; however, it remained an independent town until 1851 when it merged with Prince Edward County. Salem’s history can be traced back to its establishment as a European settlement and its incorporation into Prince Edward County. Salem began as a small Indian village called Pakoka on January 8, 1736 By order of Governor James Fairfax as part of Henrico Colony along with his son John who had also been appointed by Governor Fairfax as Deputy Captain for this new colony Pakoka lay on present day Route 9 between Potomac River and Occoquan Creek which made for easy travel for early settlers The first permanent settler in what would become Salem was Captain George Washington who arrived there on October 12th, 1737 He built a house on the lot now known as Eastern Road . Captain Washington's home remain standing to this day and is currently used as office space by thePrince Edward County Sheriff's Department Captain Washington's wife Hannah moved from their original cabin near current Day street (now Randolph road) to build themselves a more comfortable home east of where they live today Captain Washington had 2 sons: Joseph (born November 10th,1737 at Fort Necessity) and Zacchaeus (born December 4th 1739). This first family lived at( then ) Eastern Road 1 mile south of present day Randolph Road

The modern-day city was founded in 1984 as a result of plans made by then-Mayor Buddy Dyer to redevelop downtown using federal funds obtained through stimulus legislation passed under George W. Bush Sr.'s administration. The original plan called for demolition of most of downtown's historic buildings, but public outcry led to a reversal of course and instead development of new community centers and low-income housing near Interstate 95/I-495 outside of town limits. Today, Salem has a population around 50,000 people who are largely concentrated within its central business district (CBD) located along I-95/I-495 north of town limits
