Roanoke is a town in the U.S. state of Virginia and is part of the Roanoke Rapids, Albemarle County, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Roanoke's history can be traced back to 1607 when English colonists founded the town on land purchased from Native Americans. In 1747, Governor Robert Dinwiddie ordered all Indian slaves in VA to be freed and brought to Roanoke as a means of providing labor for British plantations. In 1801, after years of discussion, General James Ketchum formally designated Roanoke as an incorporated town on July 1st. On December 12th, 1802, John Sevier became the first Mayor of Roanoke with James Hildebrandt serving as Vice Mayor The initial Town Hall was located at 4 Main Street which still stands today! The current Town Hall building was built in 1903-1904 by local builder Wm JB Fenton & Company and is now used as a First Baptist Church! In 1812 Captain John Smith explored what is now known as Northumberland County and he named it after his native Scotland - "Rohanock." He also found that there were valuable saltpeter mines near present day Durhamtown and so he began mining operations here in 1815. In 1817-18 Captain John Smith's son Joshua established a ferry service between Rohanock Island (now called Swannett Island) off Northumberland Co., VA and Elizabeth City on Tidewater River where saltpeter production continued nearly until 1830! In 1861 Majestic Theatre opened in downtown Roanoke with prominent playwright George Bernard Shaw playing several times during its brief run before being demolished in 1912 First Presbyterian Church opened in 1865 following congregation's move from nearby White Sulphur Springs community
