Although tobacco production died out during the 19th century due to disease and poor soil quality, Roanoke has been home to many large industrial plants over the years including Dominion Paper Company (now Dow Chemical), American Tobacco Company (ATC), Coca-Cola Bottling Plant No. 2 & 3 (now Pepsi-Cola Bottling Plant No. 2 & 3), Central Paint Products Inc., Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OCC) and J&J Energy Resources Company (JJEEC). In recent years there has been a significant effort underway to revive economic activity in Roanoke through such measures as new development around downtown and Jubilee Park. In 1976, Roanoke became one of several cities within the then newly created Commonwealth of Virginia that joined together to form the Elizabeth City County metropolitan area which now includes all or portions of Frederick County adjacent to Richmond proper as well as much more eastern shoreline including Chesapeake Bay Bridgeport SEPTA station; Hampton Roads Ferry Terminal; Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co.; Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; Newport News Edison Electric Light Company; Elizabeth City State University; Elizabeth City Mall; Albemarle Sound Regional Medical Center In 1980s/90s there were efforts by corporate headquarters companies such as Dupont Circle Partners LLP (), HSBC Holdings plc (), Google parent company Alphabet Inc (). There have also been attempts by some individuals or foundations like “Friends of historic Roanoke” () or “Virginia Tech Hokies Sustainability Initiative” (). However these efforts have generally failed due largely to lack of support from elected officials or residents living close enough for day-to-day impactful decisions about infrastructure maintenance or redevelopment projects
