The Roanoke Colony was a slave-based, English colony in the present day Virginia. The area now known as Roanoke Island was first settled by the Powhatans in 1607 and then purchased by English colonists in 1619. The colony was founded by a group of investors who traveled to Jamestown, Virginia in May 1624 with the purpose of purchasing land for settlement. The group consisted of twenty-six men and six women, all of whom were enslaved. On July 12, 1629, they set out from England on their ship the James Worthy with over one hundred slaves aboard. After crossing the Atlantic Ocean, they arrived at what is now North Carolina on December 9,1629. They began to build their own colony there and named it after King James I of England – James I's new kingdom had been established in Scotland following his victory over Spanish forces at the Battle of Monmouth two years earlier. After three years living here, however, most of the original settlers died from disease or famine which also struck England during this time period. In February 1635, Plymouth Colony was founded by Plymouth Quarterly Meeting (later called Congregational) members led by John Winthrop who sailed upriver to Yorktown Peninsula where he captured an enemy fortification called Fort Royal on April 14th/15th and naming it after himself – "New Haven" thereafter became home to many Puritan colonies including Rhode Island and Connecticut which followed suit soon afterward. Of course similar changes took place throughout British America as other groups such as Huguenots fled persecution back home during this time period; thus creating a large number of new settlements across North America both free and enslaved that continue this current pattern today!
British forces under General Edward Cornwallis landed on Roanoke Island in December 1774 to capture the British colonists. The attempt failed, and the British retreated. The colony's first governor, Nicholas-Jacques Conte, moved the capital from Williamsburg to Roanoke in 1775. By 1776, the population of the island had grown to around 100 people. In October 1779, Conte was killed by Native Americans while trying to flee across a bay. His body was found near what is now called "Conte Point." The English renamed the island "Northumberland" after Conte's death, and continued to use it as their main base for operations against the colonies until they were forced out by a combined American and French force in 1814.
