In 1775, during King George III's American Revolution, many Virginians sided with their British monarch against their American government. Aftermath of this event saw large numbers of Virginians flee or fight against British forces throughout North America; some even reached Virginia Beach where they built a fortification known as Fort Moultrie on Hilton Head Island off Cape Fear River (now Wilmington). At its peak strength – about 9500 military personnel – this stronghold represented one-third of all British soldiers stationed in North America at that time. During World War II, portions of Virginia were occupied by Japanese troops during World War II's Battle Of Lexington/Roanoke Sound (1943).
