The Roanoke Valley is a long and narrow valley located in central Virginia. It stretches from the Shenandoah Mountains to the James River, covering an area of over 161 square miles. In 1776, following American independence from Great Britain, Roanoke became part of America During Reconstruction following World War II, many African Americans moved into the Valley because they were discriminated against by local white communities. However, white violence against these newcomers led to widespread social unrest throughout much of Virginia during that period. In 1969 Virginians approved passage of laws banning discrimination based on race or religion in public accommodations statewide. Since then there have been few negative incidents reported involving people based on their race or religion in Virginia

Roanoke was founded in 1619 by Captain John Smith and his team of English settlers as a trading post on the James River. The town grew rapidly, becoming an important transportation hub for goods transported down the river to Chesapeake Bay. In 1792, Roanoke became a part of Virginia and soon after experienced significant growth due to its strategic location and importance as a commercial center. The town's cotton plantations were among the most productive in the region, and over time Roanoke became one of the most influential slave-owning communities in America. In 1801, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter, Roanoke was sacked and burned by Union troops under General Robert Ewell. although many of the town's buildings survived, much of its population had been slaughtered or captured during the battle. By 1860, however, Roanoke had become an important economic center once again thanks to its strategic location on Williamsburg Peninsula and its heavy industry including shipbuilding and manufacturing. Despite this positive development, Roanoke was struck by a series of devastating natural disasters in 1865 which caused extensive damage both inside and outside the town limits. This has left it one of Virginias most severely damaged towns ever subjected to external factors. Today, much like other parts of Virginia that have undergone similar challenges over recent decades, Roanoke is still struggling to bounce back from these damaging events while also striving to maintain some level of overall community stability
The Roanoke Colony was founded in the early 1600s by English colonists, who named it after the red-tailed hawk that became one of their initial symbols. The colony grew rapidly and soon had a population of about 200 people. In 1619, the English government granted them a charter to establish a permanent colony on what is now called Virginia Beach, just south of Norfolk, Virginia. By 1625, the colony had grown to over 1,000 people and created its own government with a governor and council. The colonists were also able to build churches and schools. In 1629, the English Crown decreed that all Virginians be Christianized and forced all male colonists to convert to Christianity or be deported. Many men refused and some even killed themselves in protest. Despite this heavy handed treatment, many Virginians continued to support their new country and helped create what is now known as Virginia's culture and history.
