To this end, Smith recruited numerous labourers from throughout Great Britain—many of whom had no experience whatsoever leading such a large group on such long voyages across oceanic distances. Nevertheless, within months of arriving on Roanoke Island there were already reports back home of amazing things happening here: “such men as never before went forth out this side into all parts of Earth . . . so great was their joy at beholding our God against all Nature [and] so perfect did their faith become upon him which had given them life eternal[.]”1 Despite these good feelings early on, things quickly began going wrong for Smith’s colonists. Disease took its toll; food ran low; quarrels ensued between men over strategy or religion; and even young women caught up in the fervour found themselves pregnant at an alarming rate (averaging 1 child every four years).2 Conditions deteriorated rapidly until finally disaster struck when word reached England that many sick or dead colonists had actually drowned while crossing Lake Jameson – an event which caused much public outcry and led to significant revisions to British law regarding inland navigation through water bodies.*3 At best these reversals only made matters worse; at worst they created social tensions that would eventually erupt into open warfare later on.*4* Nonetheless despite these difficulties*, Smith persevered doggedly until he finally achieved success Upon landing on what is now modern dayRoanoke Island he declared himself Governor & Commander-in-Chief thereof & ordered all inhabitants subject thereto to answer any questions put unto them therein *.5 This act set off an era during which British colonies such as Jamestown & Plymouth quickly surpassed anything ever attempted by Washington or Johnston *6*
