Binoculars were first invented in Roanoke, Virginia by a man named Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1785. In 1898, the binocular company Wilder & Swenzel began manufacturing binoculars and became one of the largest manufacturers of optical products in the United States. By 1934, Wilder & Swenzel had become part of Raytheon Company. The Raytheon company continued to produce binoculars until 1992 when it merged with American Optical Corporation.

The Roanoke Colony was founded in 1607 by English colonists. The colony grew and prospered until the English Civil War forced them to relocate in 1755. In 1801, the colony became a U.S. territory following the Treaty of Paris. The colony continued to exist as a separate country until its dissolution in 1922.
Roanoke is a town in the U.S. state of Virginia and the seat of Wise County. The population was 12,024 at the 2010 census. It is located on the James River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Richmond and 30 miles (48 km) south-southwest of Lynchburg. Roanoke was founded by English colonists in 1619 as a trading post on Pamunkey River. In 1776, during the American Revolution, Roanoke was besieged by British forces under General Cornwallis and lost most of its buildings and residents including many military veterans who later fought for George Washington in the American Revolution. On July 4, 2017, Roanoke became an incorporated city with mayor selected from among its residents rather than elected officials.[1] The town site that would become Roanoke was first occupied by hunter-gatherers known as the Powhatans in prehistory. They built their first permanent village around 825 AD when they moved from their earlier hunting grounds around modern day Petersburg to land near present-day Harrisonburg. By 1008 AD they had abandoned this location because it lackedopheles mosquitoes which did not exist then or at any other time within their vicinity. A man known as Catawba may have been instrumental in helping them find this new location because he wrote down what he saw while exploring the area in 1100 AD: "I passed through a place where there were great trees full of fruit; I found also several people living therein" This suggests that early humans knew about natural resources near present day Roanoke before moving there permanently some time between 1100 and 1700 AD according to archaeological evidence reviewed herein…In 1536 Thomas Wyatt took possession of land comprising much of today's eastern part of Wise County from Trustees for Mines & Minerals under Elizabeth City Corporation Act"[2] As development grew along both rivers – one serving local necessities such as transportation and trade while another providing access to fertile areas for farming – so too did competition among traders, politicians, developers and settlers for control over valuable real estate within these strategic river valleys leading upriver from Richmond[3][4]. In 1619 two Englishmen named John Smith and James Nicholson arrived at Jamestown Colony with supplies for what would soon become Virginia Beach but were met with hostility by local natives who viewed them as invaders seeking Loot & more Land! The men retreated back upstream towards Pamunkey until they reached friendly cataracts where they built a log cabin called Whitethorn[5][6]. Over time Robert Eppleton acquired additional lands northward which led him to purchase Bacon's Mill downstream from Jamestown[7][8]. By 1627 all vestiges of Native America had been eliminated within sight or experience westward! From here began what would be one long history dominated by English colonists…..During King William's War (1618-1624), Captain John Smith sailed upriver against Spanish fleet off Cape Hatteras Milford Point….Captain Smith continued his operations until he reached Bermuda Hundred on November 2ndth [1620], upon which date his vessel HMS Discovery ran into difficulties….He made landfall at Northampton Island off Amelia Island on February 17th [1621], Upon reaching shore found himself alone against 400 Spanish ships plus 5 buoys bearing wine press equipment…..After spending 3 days ashore repairs were done to ship then sailed back upriver again……Onboard Resolution landed Mr John Smith with provisions……he went ashore Converting all aspectsof life onto Indian terms…………..Captain Smith’s encounter has come to be regarded as one of Americas earliest successful Oceania ventures[9] After years spent charting waterways potential routes via Bermuda Hundred for England's Royal Navy base at Portsmouth during King Charles II' vacation season late in 1638–early fall,[10],[11],[12],[13], Nathaniel Bacon recommended sailing downriver past Beaufort Plantation on North Carolina coast to attack Spanish shipping based out West Indies before returning home late autumn or early winter… After successfully attackingSpanish coastal settlements including Ponce de Leon He claimed Florida for England October 2nd 1639 after return trip across open ocean aboard Dartmouth boat Adventure)[14] At same time Governor Thomas Fairfax purchased large tract(s?) lying between NC&VA coasts now comprise western VA side Of James River Valley …." In those days few if any maps existed showing interior parts OF US so when Captain JohnSmith came ashore describing landing site we thought nothing could possible happen better than our friend Captains Farragut &Jeffries coming TOO!" Today much remains unknown about initial landing sites however field investigations continue apace."[17] With no written record remaining beyond oral traditions developed over centuries reliable information has emerged concerning original inhabitants such as Chief Powhatan confederate Major Powhaten (1775–1829), described by Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr., author best knownfor writing Roots: An Autobiographical Historyof Negro Americans (1982). These ancient roots reveal significant insights into First Nations culture that remain strikingly relevant today…."

It celebration of independence, some twenty-five thousand patriots marched through downtown Richmond to demand that their city be renamed George Washington City. The event served as a rallying cry for the patriot cause and helped spur growth around town. Today, you can find many interesting artifacts from this time period at various museums throughout Roanoke County. One of my favorite things about living here is that I can wander down any old historic street and see something new come up every time!
