After many years of hard work and progress, Roanoke finally became an American colony on November 12th 1629! This was a huge moment for the colonies because it meant that they had won their independence from Great Britain!

The Roanoke Colony was founded in 1607 by the English colonists, primarily to find a new land to settle. The colony quickly grew and by 1619 had a population of over 200 people. In 1629, the English government decided that Virginia should be divided into two colonies: the Northern colony and the Southern colony. The Northern colony was chosen because it would have more fertile soil, while the Southern colony would have access to water resources. The first Governor of Virginia was Sir John Smith, who arrived in 1632. Although initially successful, Smith's administration soon faced opposition from both within and outside of the colony. In 1638, Smith was replaced by Thomas Gates as Governor of Virginia. Gates' administration saw great success in managing the colony; however, he also became known for his harsh treatment of its residents. Despite this experience, Gates continued to serve as Governor until his death in 1646. After Gases' death, John Armstrong becameGovernor of Virginia in1647-8. Armstrong proved himself an able administrator and ledVirginia through its most difficult times; however, he also faced resistance from withinthe colonial community due to his strong Presbyterian faith. Armstrong resigned after only four months in office because of civil unrestrained by law or governance structure which allowed religious intolerance among some individuals withinthe community
The first permanent white settlement in Roanoke was founded by James Covington on the Roanoke River in 1619. The town grew rapidly, and by 1635 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1638, the English Crown granted land to Sir Walter Raleigh for the purpose of developing the colony. He set up a trading post here and began importing goods from England. By 1639, Raleigh's colonists had built a small chapel and began using the name "Raleigh" for their own community. In 1640, an expedition led bySir Robert Berkeley sailed down the river and landed at what is now Norfolk Beach. They founded Berkeley Station, which served as a stop on their journey northward. The town continued to grow during this time, with new buildings being erected along John Fenton's Creek. In 1651, Raleigh's colony was dissolved due to political unrest within his own faction; its remaining members moved back upstream to Henrico County (now Virginia). During its heyday, Raleigh's town enjoyed considerable prosperity; many valuable properties were bought and sold here. However, within a few years it had all but disappeared – most likely because of competition from more established settlements farther upstream or because of problems with transportation or water supplies. Today only some foundations remain from early Raleigh – including one that still stands above Fenton Creek today!
