Richmond, Virginia was founded in 1747 by the brothers George and James Richmond. They named their town after King George II of Great Britain, who had been General of the British Army at the Battle of Yorktown. The brothers developed a small farm on Main Street to provide food for their family and sold goods door-to-door. By 1814, they had constructed a gristmill on Anderson's Mill Road to grind wheat into flour which they baked into bread and sold to local farmers. In 1827, they bought an interest in J.B. Morse & Co., a flour mill and timber company that located near present day Shockoe Bottom in Richmond County. At this time, Richmond became one of the largest cotton growing areas in America with over 1,000 acres (400 hectares) planted with cotton. In 1851, George Washington Randolph purchased the land from James Richmond for $10,000 dollars cash plus three slaves whom he purchased from John Brown of Harper’s Ferry fame for $2 each! Randolph renamed his plantation "George Washington Randolph" after our first president! He began planting corn and tobacco on the property which would later become known as North Point Plantation. In addition to his farming endeavors, he also built a home on North Point which is still standing today! In 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell tried unsuccessfully to enter Petersburg through Brownsville Road he decided instead to cross Broad Creek at West Point Cemetery where he was discovered by Union troops who captured him and took him back to Lynchburg jail where he remains today! In 1901, lightbulbs were invented by Guglielmo Marconi which led directly to mass production of firearms using electricity as a power source! For many years until 1935 all handguns were made without any form of flashlight or other illumination device except for muzzleloaders employing lead bullets that caused sparks when firing!!! This continued until adoption of modern sighting devices like night sights allowing owners discretion about using light while shooting…the consequences could be deadly!!!
