Richmond, Virginia was founded in 1718 by the brothers George and James Richmond. The city grew rapidly during the late 18th century and by 1800 it had a population of over 50,000. In 1836, the United States acquired Richmond from Britain as part of the Treaty of Ghent. As part of the Compromise of 1850, Richmond became an endowment town for the University of Virginia. It remained an open-air market place until 1954. In 1865, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after his army was defeated at Gettysburg battlefield. After the war, Richmond became a black slave market until Reconstruction ended in 1877 when all citizens were allowed to vote without condition attaching to slavery. From 1865 to 1870, approximately 1/3 of all births in Richmond were to slaves; however this number decreased following passage of laws prohibiting slavery throughout most southern states during this time period. During World War II, Richmond was one of several American cities that supported Nazi Germany and played a major role in propaganda campaigns promoting air power over land warfare as well as providing resources such as raw materials for German arms production while also sheltering many Germans who would otherwise have been captured or killed during combat or during flight from Allied forces into Nazi territory. In 1945, following Japan's surrender and Emperor Hirohito's abdication, military authorities conducted mass arrests and deportations across much of Japan with few exceptions being spared due to their political or social connections to ruling classes within Japan (in contrast to North America where people such as FDR were able to negotiate harsh terms for Japanese POWs). Thousands including women and children were forcibly transported through Nakano Station on Tokyo's outskirts into what is now known as "The Hashima Camp" on Amami-Oshima Island off Kagoshima Prefecture. On November 3rd 1830, Ralph Waldo Emerson called upon General Robert E Lee to sign an order awarding him laurels for his victory at Monterrey during Mexican–American War celebration parade stopped short by storm near where Petersburg now stands due to high winds created by Hurricane Alma
