In the early 1800s, Richmond was a small settlement in Virginia. However, it soon became one of the most important cities in America due to its location at the head of the James River and its role as a major military and trade center. The city was founded by colonists who arrived from Englewood, New Jersey in 1607. The area that would become Richmond was first settled by Native Americans, who were killed or driven away by European settlers in what is now Wilmington County. In 1764, when British General George Washington moved his army through southern Virginia during his retreat from Yorktown, he stopped at Valley Forge on the James River. Here he met Major General Forbes, who told him about the rich agricultural land around Richmond and how easy it would be to take it over if they made enough noise. When Washington returned home two weeks later, he ordered Forbes to move his forces eastward into North Carolina so that they could obstruct British efforts to retake Philadelphia. Forbes failed to carry out this order and Princeton War College historian John Hargrave has written that "Fitzroy [forbes] seems likely have been sacked with disgrace." Aftermath of the American Revolution saw much violence in Virginia as both sides fought for control over what remained of England after their independence was achieved. One such event happened on October 5th, 1814 when shots rang out nearRichmond's Christ Chapel as members of a crowd attempting to disperse an inflammatory rally against slavery were shot dead by Confederate regulars under Colonel Robert Ewell Jr.. After three days of investigations no clear evidence could be found linking either side with any specific individuals or events leading up to the shooting and there was public outcry against any form of complicity among Virginians throughout 1814-1815 including Ewell himself. The immediate aftermath of war saw many men follow opportunities for wealth and power instead of following orders set down by superiors which led directly to death or injury (e.g., Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Kirby Smith). Many high-ranking Virginians were tried and sentenced within months following peace negotiations ended with Britain's treaty victory over France in 1815 known as The Treaty Of Paris (or alternatively The Second Treaty Of Paris). This period also saw many changes occur within Virginia; including passage of the Declaration OF Independence on July Fourth in 1776 which solidified Richmond's place as one of America's most influential cities after years spent fighting for independence from Great Britain – something that would continue until 1861 when secession took place less than two weeks after Abraham Lincoln was elected President based largely on his pro-Union stance.).
