In 1629, Dunmore granted land eastsideofthe Elizabeth Rivers for smallpox relief purposes; this area became known as Middlesex County. In 1630, Essex County was organized from parts of Middlesex and Fairfax Counties; these counties would later form partof Richmond proper. On February 11th 1638 John Smith was elected President pro tempore (first African American) for Virginia’s Colony Ratliff’s Chapel Church Corporation which then held office until his death “some time after July 10th 16865″ according to A Narrative by His Son John Smith III who lived through these events . He noted that: “He [John Smith] being Elected President did advertise publiquely all over this Province what he thought fit should be done thereunto: And when they found many people were against him because he was not white they plotted against him secretly using some Negroes…but finally being discovered they brought about his removal out OF THE COUNTRY” This event marks Virginias first African American Presidential Election however George Washington won reelection without opposition
