Radford, Virginia is a small town in Orange County, Virginia, United States. The population was 7,651 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated municipality in Virginia. Radford was founded in 1795 as a watering stop for travelers on the Great Northern Road. The first permanent settler in the area was Captain John Jameson and his wife Sarah Short Jameson. In 1819, General Daniel Boone visited Radford and recommended it as a place to establish a military base because of its strategic location on the Rappahannock River. Radford became an independent town on January 1, 1821 after voting to secede from Fairfax County. On July 9 of that year, President James Ketchum issued an Executive Order establishing Radford as an independent republic under the name of "Rappahannock Republic". On November 3rd of that year, Congress passed a bill creating Fairfax County and annexing Radford into it as its component community. The townsfolk were forced to move when Fairfax County was created and they could not vote or hold office within its boundaries. The original courthouse located in what is now downtown Radford was destroyed by fire on December 6th of 1829 which left the town without any legal recourse until 1830 when Judge George Witherspoon granted them an injunction barring further fires without proper insurance claims being filed. That courthouse served as the nucleus for much of present-day downtown’s architecture including both state Supreme Court building (now used by UVa) and the old county jail complex which still stands today next to City Hall Park across from Fort Totten National Monument). On February 5th 1861 Confederate General Jubal Early marched through town with 1,500 men looking for Federal troops stationed at Fort Monroe near Alexandria VA & overran it resulting in most all local citizens evacuating before surrendering themselves or being captured alive (& about 400 women & children). About 50% inhabitants were negro free residents who had taken up arms against their white compatriots during this time period however many few buildings still stand today including Baptist church which burned down during reconstruction efforts following war; Russian Orthodox church also standing; school house (now home to Radio Shack), Masonic Lodge No 2 (built 1958), Jail Complex ( obsolete now but preserved), Post Office/ Savings Bank building & several other buildings remained largely unoccupied throughout postwar years while businesses closed or moved out due mainly to technology advancements new Interstate Highway construction beginning coming thru town making it easier access radial distance wise only becoming more developed overall with recent reopening of main Streets leading into downtown followed by redevelopment project completed last year(2010) In 1865 Union General William Tecumseh Sherman crossaded Rappahannock River bridge over river just northwest of city limits then 4 months later burned down entire village trying destroying all evidence so no one would know what happened back then except maybe some ruins found along side river bank today
