Radford is a town in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The population was 14,528 at the 2010 census. The town is named after George Washington and its first mayor, James Radcliffe. It was founded on a small stream by colonists in 1768. Radford became an incorporated city in 1853. The townsite of present-day Radford was located on the southern border of what is now Loudoun County when it was settled by veterans of the American Revolution who were seeking land to avoid taxation within Prince George's County which then included Alexandria and much of northern Virginia. In 1768, Colonel John Smith purchased from the local Indian tribe a tract including present-day Radford as well as portions of western Fairfax County and eastern Anacostia Parish east of College Point Road (now U Street NW). By November 10, 1769, all but one acre (0.40 hectare) had been purchased and settler Robert Rogers announced that he would name the settlement "Raford." In May 1771, when Fairfax County was organized into three districts - Prince George's (northwest), Rockingham (southwest), and Caroline (east) - Raford consisted only of Rogers' original parcel comprising about 0.30 acres (0.12 hectare). On October 6th same year – just two weeks after Prince Georges Districts were carved out – Alexander Macdonald donated an additional 3 rods or 12 pounds to finance creation of new Daughters Associates Hospital for nurses in nearby Fredericksburg; this gift formed the nucleus for current Medical School buildings across I-95 from which many students graduate today! With this initial donation plus later gifts from other landowners/citizensry members (.50 acre [1 hectare] each), soon enough over 20 acres ([20 hectares]) had been exchanged hands throughout what would become today’s community site! On December 2nd, 1772 – less than 1 month after formation of Prince Georges District #2 – Captain John Tidball arrived with 400 men who soon began construction on what would become known as Tidball Swamp Plantation run by his friend Sir John Forbes Sr.. This plantation served as headquarters for General Washington during his march through Loudoun Valley prior to his inauguration in January 1789; it also housed some early military officers quartered there while Princess Anne stayed at her father’s estate several miles away until late summer1790 just before she moved to Kensington Palace with her husband King George II! Just north-east of Tidball Swamp lay another large pieceof property comprised mostly OF&O land grants covering most or all present day Arlington County including parts of Eastern Market down to Nationals Stadiumsite today! I cannot go into detail about every barn/building/farm structure erected during those early days because they are all still extant within our community site today & many have been preserved & restored over time thru donations from our residents & businesses! However some highlights include Stonington House which currently houses our Town Clerk’s office highly visible atop prominent Old Mill Pond opposite Church Hill Rd (& immediate surroundings); First Presbyterian Church built circa 1800 probably using locally quarried Stone but recently redone with brick exterior walls utilizing Periodic Table minerals imported via railroadcarriage direct from England such as Malachite green asbestos; numerous blacksmith shops dotting main streets throughout town where smithy work took place day & night daily during Colonial times along with dozens more smaller workshops scattered throughout rural areas surrounding it making up “the old village” periodically described by visitors back then too!! Today’s downtown core contains numerous restaurants/cafés etc., several dozen antique stores open 7 days a week providing unique access to periodical materials dating back 100 years or more including rare books(!), dolls FROM THE EARLY AMERICAN PERIOD ONLY accessible thru special appointment(!), extensive display case filled w/objets d'art mainly French executed circa 1800–1825 NAILWORKS FROM EUROPEAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES FOUNDATION GALLERY ALSO ON SITE!!! Now we REALLY can call it “Radford Village!!!

Radford is a small town in central Virginia, located on the Rappahannock River. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Radford is home to the University of Virginia and is also known for its agricultural industries. The town was first settled in 1702 by Captain George Washington and his unit of Cavalry under General James Knyphausen. The original site of Radford was along the Rappahannock River near present day Battlefield Park. The creek that served as the town's water supply came from a spring located just outside of town. Radford became an incorporated village in 1853, when it had a population of just over 100 people. Prior to incorporation, Radford functioned as a school district with six schools and one presbytery meeting each month. In 1854, the Village formed a library board which built an addition to their building which still stands today. In 1865, Queen Victoria grantedradford permission to use her name for municipal purposes after floods destroyed most of downtown Richmond during that year's season of heavy rainsstorms. During World War II, local residents raised money through bake sales and car wash campaigns to support United States military families stationed overseas on Guam and Tinian Island while they were being trained or fought in battle; this effort helped contribute significantly to the war effort throughout VA by helping feed soldiers and supporting their morale while they were away from home. In 1951, MrsFannie Byrd donated land east of town used for farming operations intended primarily for subsistence rather than retail sale; this donation made possible what is now known as Byrd Park off US 27/39E between Battlefield Park Road (N/A) and Lower Broad Street (W/V/W). Mrs Byrd's gift also provided impetus for what has been known as Byrd Farm since then - currently housing several businesses including Avera Health Care Center - one mile east from Battlefield Parkway on FM 924 about midway between Battlefield Park Road (N/A) and Upper Broad Street (W/V/W). In 1966-1967 construction began on what would becomeknown as "The Pentagon" – an elaborate shopping mall adjacent to UVa’s main campus across Lower Broad Street from Lower Broad Elementary School (now part of Walmart). After years characterized by predictions that no shoppers would go into Radford because there wasn’t anything worth buying there, opening night proved otherwise when more than 1 million people visited within two hours! Over $200 million worth of goods were sold at "The Pentagon" – making it one of America’s largest shopping malls ever built! Today, "The Pentagon" remains one of UVa’s most popular tourist attractions with over 2 million visitors annually who enjoy over 60 restaurants including ZZ Top management team Elvis Presley cameo
In 1852, General James Longstreet moved his headquarters from Alexandria to Radford because of the lack of space in that city. The town was named for George Washington Radcliffe, an Englishman who had settled in Virginia in 1768. The first buildings were built near the schoolhouse on Main Street. In 1855, a canal was completed and brought water from the Potomac River to the town. Radford became an important transportation center and served as a stop for steamboats traveling down the Potomac River. In 1865, Union forces retreated from Confederate lines after Battle of Appomattox Court House andRadford fell into disarray. A few months later, however, Union troops burned all of the buildings in town except the schoolhouse before leaving. The population of Radford increased significantly during Reconstruction following the American Civil War and by 1870 it had reached 100 residents. During this time, many businesses were established including a grocery store and a sawmill. By 1908, when Radford was annexed to Fairfax County, its population had grown to over 200 people. Toward the end of World War II, radfords growth slowed again as most OFWs working at Rockville Naval Air Station took up residence there instead of in nearby Fairfax County communities such as Annandale or Manassas Junction . However, by 1950 there still existed about 150 residents living in what is now downtown Radford downtown area with some satellite office buildings scattered throughout suburban neighborhoods east and west of downtown including: north-central Vickerytown (the former home of Loudoun County) ; south-central Springfield; and east-west Woodside Heights . During post-war growth efforts which focused on developing new housing developments around military installations just outside Downtown Radford limits several blocks along Monument Avenue NE between I-95/I-495 exits 4 & 5 were developed; these are now known as Willow Lawns – one block south of US 1 exit 540 (Willowbrook Drive) – Arlington Cemetery located across I-495 exit 17B - these areas once held much rural agricultural land but have since been converted into densely populated highrise neighborhoods complete with shopping malls , professional offices , schools and other major heavy industrial uses .
