Radford, Virginia (born October 17, 1787) is an American town and seat of Radford County in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It lies on the Blue Ridge Mountains and has a population of around 507 as of the 2010 census. The name "Radford" comes from James Johnstone's estate. The first settler in what is now Radford was James Johnstone, who arrived in belief that he could find water there. He found a pond but left because the land had been claimed by his brother-in-law, Colonel George Washington. Washington then surveyed and dedicated a square mile (2 km²) to be called "Johnstone's Fields" for James Johnstone. The area became known as Radford after General Washington's aide-de-camp Lt.-General Nathanael Greene used it during the Patriot War for encampment and supplies. In 1792, George Washington laid out a townsite comprising present day Radford with four blocks (now six). Two years later, he named it "New Vernon". After being reënacted as part of Fairfax County on April 14, 1802 by President Thomas Jefferson following the admission of Virginia into the Union as a state, New Vernon reverted to its original name on November 3, 1802 when old New Vernon became Fairfax County also within new Virginia. In 1834–35 Edwin Augustus Kelley built Kelly House near present day White Sulphur Springs for his wife Julia Ann Kelley and their five children: Elliott E., Franklin G., Alice K., Charles W., and Carrie L.. From this house a lighted signal fire signaled visitors entering or leaving Kelly House downriver from Indianola Falls until 1924 when all signals were discontinued due to code enforcement reasons at that point; however descendants continue to use lighted signals today at White Sulphur Springs below Kelly House signposted "White Sulphur Springs." From here William Byrd founded West Point Military Academy in 1837 which still stands today adjacent to Radford University campus across Main Street from Administration Building; it was one of two UVA schools opened in America during Byrd’s time – other being Bard College in Kentucky – both buildings are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From this academy Byrd developed what would become UVA’s first football team in 1839 which played its first game against Christ Church Academy near Charlottesville under conditions unfavorable enough for play that only 10 players were able to attend including future president Andrew Johnson who played quarterback for one scoreless minute before fouling out with 1:00 remaining; this game is generally considered to be Maryland’s inaugural college football game. On December 7th 1840 West Point hosted Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell numbering over 40000 people including Generals Stonewall Jackson ( commander) & Jubal Early under cover of darkness while most residents remained indoors playing cards or watching religious services; although early reports claim high casualties Confederate cavalry reached West Point undetected prior thereto resulting in many contemporary histories incorrectly attributing loss at battle Easton Station site instead where flank guard encountered Federal horse artillery enroute also contributing much confusion leading up to engagement such events occurred creating one possible reason why battlefield remains undiscovered today despite numerous searches throughout last few decades by various teams including current excavations along side creek bed just east of Administration Building housing museum currently operated by university.). At outbreakofwarPresident Andrew Johnson ordered general evacuation westward taking all students westward some 4500 miles away finally ending戦争 outside Petersburg

Radford is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 10,847 at the 2010 census. Radford was founded in 1781 by General George Washington and his men as a headquarters for the British military during their unsuccessful attempt to take Washington's capital of Philadelphia. The town was named after Colonel James Radforth, an officer in the British Army who had served with Washington on the Delaware Expedition and then fought against him at Yorktown. The first school in Radford opened in 1785. In 1802, a gristmill was built and operated until 1892; it remains one of the most significant buildings in Radford. In 1814,Congress established what is now UVa College here as part of UVA's mountain campus system. In 1861, Confederate general Robert Eager Johnston attacked Union forces near Radford Junction on the Potomac River and successfully drove them back across the river before turning towards Charlottesville. A month later, Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant reached Radford Junction and destroyed Johnston's army there before moving on to destroy Confederate supply lines further downriver at Harper's Ferry. This event solidified Union control of Virginia after the American Civil War ended two years earlier than planned. Radford has been home to many famous people over its history including: George Washington (1732-1799), Thomas Jefferson (1801-1865), Abraham Lincoln (1861-1912), James Buchanan (1857-1925) and Franklin D Roosevelt (1929-1945). Many well known stores or businesses have been located here such as Macy's department store which opened its doors here in 1922; JCPenney started operations here in 1968; Coca Cola began operations here in 1912; Sears Roebuck & Co.'s first store opened its doors here in 1902; etc.; among others
The town of Radford, Virginia was founded in 1774 by the brothers Thomas and James Radford. The town became a county seat in 1801. In 1932, it merged with neighboring Fairfax County to form the current entity.
