Radford is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 36,026 at the 2010 census. Radford is one of two towns located in Fairfax County and both are served by the Radford City School District. It is part of the Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Native American occupants of what is now Radford were the Rappahannock Indians. The area then became part of English East India Company territory as it was surveyed for a road connecting London with North America. In 1624, General James Lovell laid out a road from here to Williamsburg through present-day Alexandria on his way to capture Jamestown in 1626. By 1795, when the town beganlimits were set and it had become an incorporated village, over 1,000 people lived thereabouts including 400 white men and 100 black men engaged in agriculture or manufacturing. When George Washington arrived at Mount Vernon on April 20, 1794 he found only about 30 families living thereabouts under grants from British Colonial authorities entitling them to purchase land for $2 per acre (the land's value then was about £10 per acre). He ordered all but 10 houses pulled down and built into barracks for troops quartered nearby atened by Washington himself on Upperville Hill which forms today's Mount Vernon Cemetery. Most early settlers were Scottish Presbyterians who had come here during the Greatup Settlement period following Lord Dunmore's revocation of royal patent titles to Scotsmen squatting near Williamsburg Sound in 1676–77; most turned back after discovering that their lands would be confiscated if they stayed put (see also "Hicksburgh" controversy). A new courthouse and jail were completed in 1800 but no settlement grew up around it until 1814 when Colonel Nathaniel Pope recommended creating a town center with stores and homes around an Ideal Market Square; this idea was Favorited by Daniel Boone who had bought property adjoining the square soon after its founding In 1825 three brothers founded Byrd & Higginson Tobacco Co.; this company became one of Radford's leading businesses until its liquidation in 1928 In 1869 Congress createdRadford College as an agricultural institution which operated separately from Virginia Agricultural College; classes started September 9th that year Later that same year construction began on what would become First Baptist Church (now White House Chapel) downtown where services have been held since 1865
